Model Overview

The Hyundai Santa Fe is a mid-size SUV from South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor. Since the first-generation model debuted in 2000, it has served as a cornerstone of the brand's global strategic lineup. As of 2026, the model on sale is the fifth-generation Santa Fe, which made its global debut in 2024 and received an annual model-year update in China in January 2026. The domestic 2026 lineup offers four variants, with official recommended retail prices ranging between RM195,800 and RM268,800. In terms of dimensions, it measures 4,830 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width, and 1,770 (1,780) mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,815 mm. Seating configurations are available in 5-, 6-, and 7-seater layouts.

Design Language

The fifth-generation Santa Fe adopts Hyundai's global  "Open for More" design philosophy alongside a boxy silhouette, utilising sharp, angular lines to create a rugged aesthetic. Up front, it features a full-width H-pattern LED light bar consisting of 196 LEDs, paired with pixelated LED headlights and an active shutter grille. The side profile is boxy and muscular, achieving a drag coefficient as low as Cd 0.30. The rear continues this robust styling, with tail lights echoing the front signature. The Explorer series features a matrix front grille with contrasting lower garnishes, while the Connoisseur series gains a honeycomb grille, body-coloured lower claddings, and 21-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the cabin is anchored by dual 12.3-inch panoramic curved displays (with the Explorer Air variant equipped with a 4.2-inch digital instrument cluster). The interior is offered in three colour schemes: Light Mist White, Wilderness Brown, and Obsidian Black.

Powertrain and Performance

The domestic 2026 Santa Fe is powered across the range by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, delivering a maximum output of 182 kW (approx. 247 hp) and a peak torque of 353 Nm. Power is transferred via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Official figures for WLTC combined fuel consumption have not been published. The range-topping Connoisseur Ultra variant is equipped with an on-demand all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. Overseas markets benefit from broader powertrain options—US-spec models are powered by a 2.5-litre turbocharged engine (277 hp / 311 lb-ft) paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, while selected regions offer a 1.6-litre turbo-hybrid system (combined output of 234 hp) alongside a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant.

Chassis and Handling

Underneath, the chassis employs a combination of a front MacPherson strut independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension. Minimum ground clearance stands at approximately 177 mm. Braking is handled by four-wheel disc brakes supported by ABS, Brake Assist, Downhill Brake Control (DBC), and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC). Drivetrain options include front-wheel drive (FWD) and on-demand all-wheel drive (AWD). The rugged overseas XRT variant is fitted with all-terrain tyres and gains an additional 1.3 inches of ground clearance. Multiple drive modes are available, with the XRT variant adding dedicated terrain modes including Mud, Snow, and Sand.

Cabin and Equipment

The cabin centres around dual integrated 12.3-inch curved screens complemented by a Head-Up Display (HUD). The infotainment system supports smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and CarLife. A UV-C sterilisation compartment is integrated into the centre console armrest. The seats are upholstered in Nappa leather, with the front seats featuring heating, ventilation, and adjustable side bolsters; the second-row seats offer power adjustment, a 'boss button' (chauffeur switch), one-touch folding, and heating functions; meanwhile, the third-row seats can be folded completely flat. Dual wireless smartphone charging pads are also provided. In terms of cargo capacity, folding down the third-row seats yields generous boot space.

Safety and Driver Assistance

On the passive safety front, the 2026 Santa Fe features a reinforced body structure with ultra-high-strength steel accounting for 53.5% and a closed-loop front door ring design. It comes standard with 10 airbags across all variants—including a front centre airbag, driver's knee airbag, and second-row side airbags—a standout inclusion in this class. For active safety, a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) is standard across the lineup. Variants from Explorer Pro onwards gain a 360-degree surround-view camera, Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM), front parking sensors, and rear parking assist. A Driver Attention Warning system is standard across the range; with the exception of the entry Explorer Air, higher trims receive a DMS camera with distraction/fatigue tracking alongside a Rear Occupant Alert. The Connoisseur series is upgraded with Projection LED headlights for substantially enhanced illumination. Notably, the overseas-spec Santa Fe earned the coveted 2026 IIHS "Top Safety Pick+" rating.

Market Performance and Reception

The Hyundai Santa Fe has seen contrasting market reception across the globe. In the US market, Santa Fe sales reached 17,858 units in the first two months of 2026, ranking as Hyundai's third best-selling model, with Q1 deliveries climbing 6% year-on-year to 33,343 units. The model has surpassed 100,000 units in annual sales for 12 consecutive years, registering 120,104 units throughout 2026. In contrast, sales in its South Korean domestic market remained sluggish—moving only 3,379 units in January 2026 to fall outside the top 10, lagging far behind its platform stablemate, the Kia Sorento (8,388 units). Industry observers attribute its cooling popularity in South Korea primarily to the polarising, ultra-boxy redesign. In China, the 2026 model strengthened its competitiveness via a "more kit for the same price" strategy, with dealer discounts dropping nett car prices in certain regions to around RM160,000. Within the segment, the Santa Fe rivals mid-size SUVs such as the Toyota Highlander, Honda Avancier, and Ford Edge. Combining rugged aesthetics with family practicality, the fifth-generation Santa Fe continues to play a pivotal role in Hyundai's global portfolio thanks to its boxy design language, flexible seating layouts, and comprehensive safety suite.
